Our take
Seventeen-year-old Elio spends a summer at his family’s villa with Oliver, the graduate student staying with them, and Luca Guadagnino shoots the whole thing like a memory of heat. It is unhurried in a way almost nothing else is, and Timothée Chalamet’s final shot at the fireplace is a genuinely great piece of acting.
The discourse is part of the film now and worth having: the age gap sits differently every year, and the source novel is franker about it. What is not in doubt is the father’s monologue near the end, which is the most generous thing any parent says in any film here.

The plot, officially
