What makes a great LGBTQ+ TV show?

The best LGBTQ+ TV shows give queer characters a full life rather than a storyline — an arc that continues after the coming out, relationships allowed to be ordinary or messy, and writers' rooms that included the people being written about. Every series here carries a Jibbi Score: our own rating, from half a rainbow to five, for how well it earns its place in the queer canon.

The Jibbi Score is our own rating, from 0.5 to 5 rainbows, for how well a series earns its place in the queer canon. It is not a quality score — third-party ratings already do that. It weighs representation that holds up, whether queer characters get interior lives, and whether the show still lands today.

What is the best LGBTQ+ TV show of all time?

Pose (2018–2021) is our pick at five rainbows: three seasons in the New York ballroom scene from 1987 onward, with the largest cast of trans actors in series-regular roles in television history and trans writers including Janet Mock running the show. It’s a Sin and Schitt’s Creek sit alongside it.

Which LGBTQ+ series are the most comforting to watch?

Heartstopper, Schitt’s Creek and Young Royals are the gentlest on this list — no queer character is punished for being queer, and the conflict comes from somewhere else. Schitt’s Creek in particular was written deliberately without homophobia in its world. Filter by Comedy or Romance to find more.
