Our take
A drag competition that began on a network nobody watched, shot through a vaseline-smeared filter to disguise the budget, and turned into a global franchise with versions in a dozen countries. Along the way it moved drag from gay bars into stadiums and handed mainstream slang, mannerisms and memes to people who have never met a drag queen.
The criticisms are real — the franchise’s relationship with trans queens took far too long to sort out, and the sheer volume of spin-offs has diluted it. But the first ten seasons contain some of the best reality television ever made, and the untucked arguments alone justify the whole enterprise.
