Our take
Andrew Haigh — of Weekend and All of Us Strangers — brought the same register to HBO: low-key, naturalistic, a lot of walking and talking about whether to text someone back. Critics called it slow, audiences did not turn up, and it was cancelled after two seasons and wrapped up in a film.
It has aged extremely well. The arguments about gentrification, open relationships and what you owe an ex are the arguments people were actually having, and Jonathan Groff’s character being mildly irritating is a feature. If you want a show where nothing terrible happens because you are gay, this is it.
