Our take
Two men from Hong Kong travel to Argentina to save their relationship, fail, break up, get back together, and fail again, in saturated colour and then in black and white. Wong Kar-wai shoots exhaustion better than anyone: the tiny kitchen, the same argument, the tango practised in a corridor.
It is not a film about being gay in any explanatory sense. Nobody comes out, nobody is persecuted; they are just terrible for each other in the specific way that two people can be. That ordinariness was radical then and is still rarer than it should be.
