Our take

In 1984, a group of lesbians and gay men in London start collecting money for miners on strike, pick a village more or less at random, and drive the cash to Wales themselves. Both groups are deeply suspicious of the other. Then the miners turn up at Pride the following year to march at the front.

It is a British feel-good film with a real spine, because it is honest about the AIDS crisis arriving in the middle of it and about the people in the village who never came round. Dominic West dancing in the miners’ welfare hall is the single most joyful scene in this entire section.
