Our take

An American expat in 1950s Mexico City becomes fixated on a younger man who is ambiguously available, and the film follows that obsession into the jungle and then somewhere much stranger. Daniel Craig is excellent and completely unguarded, playing need rather than seduction.

The Burroughs source material is fragmentary and Guadagnino does not solve that; the ayahuasca sequence divides rooms and the ending is more of a dissolve than a conclusion. Worth it for the performance and for how rarely a film this well-funded is willing to sit with unreciprocated queer desire.
