Our take
A young farmer drinking himself through a bleak Yorkshire winter meets the Romanian migrant worker hired for lambing season. It is cold, muddy and almost wordless for long stretches, and the tenderness, when it arrives, is all the more startling for it.
Francis Lee shoots farm work with no romanticism whatsoever, which is what makes the relationship believable β these are two people who are physically exhausted and reaching for each other anyway. Comparisons to Brokeback Mountain are fair, with one crucial difference: this one gives them a future.
